Hills are where robot mowers differ the most. A two-wheel-drive mower rated for 30% will stall or slide on a bank that an all-wheel-drive model climbs without trouble. Getting this right matters more than any other spec if your yard isn't flat.

What slope ratings mean

Makers list slope as a percentage: feet of rise per 100 feet of run. Percent and degrees are easy to confuse, and the difference is large.

Slope %DegreesWhat it looks like
10%5.7°Gentle grade most mowers handle at the map edge
20%11.3°Typical sloped front yard
30%16.7°Steep enough to feel on foot
45%24.2°Hard to push a mower up
80%38.7°Too steep for a riding mower
84%40°Highest rating we found (Navimow X430)

Measure your slope

Lay a straight 4 ft board on the steepest part of the hill with a level on top. Lift the downhill end until the board is level, then measure the gap to the ground in inches. Divide by 48 and multiply by 100 for the slope percentage. A 10 in gap is about 21%.

Watch the boundary rating

Several mowers list a lower limit at the edge of the map, where they turn. The Navimow i110 is rated 30% inside the lawn but 10% at the boundary, and the GOAT O1000 RTK is 45% inside but 17% at the boundary. If your slope runs right to the edge of the lawn, use the boundary figure.

Is it safe to run a robot mower on a steep hill?

Within its rating, yes. All these mowers stop the blades when lifted or tipped. Wet grass reduces traction, so pause mowing after rain on steep banks.

What if part of my yard is steeper than any rating?

Mark it as a no-go zone in the app and handle it with a string trimmer, or replant it with ground cover that doesn't need mowing.
